- A student calibrates an unmarked mercury-in-glass thermometer. When the thermometer is immersed in pure melting ice, the length of the mercury column is 4 cm. When it is immersed in pure boiling water, the length of the mercury column is 22 cm. If the temperature now rises 10°C, what is the increase in the length of the mercury column? What is the temperature measured by the thermometer when the length of the mercury column is 13 cm. If the thermometer is used to measure human body temperature, which is 37°C, what will be the length of the mercury column?
